Sympathy for the Devil

Ay, ay there ain't no rest for the wicked.

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

The Devil has gone through numerous makeovers since his conception long long ago. What once used to be a winged creature with a figure similar to that of a man, has now transformed into a jacked, cherry red creature with horns and a pointy tail that goes nowhere without its pitchfork. Over time, the devil has remained the representation of evil and the gatekeeper of Hell (sorry for the religious reference, but you'll get over it); however, the way we as people see this entity has strayed from the medieval representation of the creature. Many once believed the Devil was a real man who became the gatekeeper of Hell when he commit acts so ruthless that he was no longer fit to be a human. Some believed that the Devil was God's adversary, and that if they resisted the Devil's temptation, that they would be free from him; thus depicting this creature as a man with wings, who would tug at a person's desires. There were many in the Renaissance who saw the Devil as a man with a tail and wings who was not red, but very dark skinned. He wore no clothes and was covered in fur, almost like a centaur- half horse, half man. Then there are those today who believe that the Devil in Little Nicky is a justifiable interpretation of the creature. Oh how we have changed. An entity that was once feared and absent from the mouths of all, is now perfectly acceptable to mock in the form of a Halloween costume and a number of starring movie roles. I'm not complaining, Adam Sandler is God (how ironic).

Please allow me to introduce myself
I'm a man of wealth and taste
I've been around for a long, long year
Stole many a man's soul and faith
